Each participant have also to send to his/her workshop leader, before Saturday, the 5th of September, a long abstract, more or less one page long, about the subject he/she decides to treat in the workshop. Participants will be asked to read some little essays about the subject of the workshop, to have a common ground of discussion during the workshops. They will be sent by workshop leaders by email on pdf format.
Pisa airport is very close to the city centre and there are low-cost flights coming from lots of European cities. From there it is simple to reach the train station (by train or by bus) and the city centre. We will organize a welcome for you, more information (on maps- welcome- bus- trains-etc.) will be posted on our blog later.
We’re waiting for you in Pisa!!
ISHA MEETING AUTUMN 2009- PISA
AN HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE ON MULTICULTURALISM
In a globalized world where human relations are helped by the development of means of transport and new communications - even if marked by reciprocal mistrust and ideological oppositions - multiculturalism is necessarily a main point of everyday debate and must be subjected to critical examination by historians. The phenomenon of multicultural societies or even countries has deep roots and history is full of examples on contacts between different societies: or better, most societies both in the past and at present are 'multicultural'. The meeting will be structured in five seminars that aim to analyse multiculturalism in a diachronic and spatially broad context, with the final purpose of understanding the main aspects.
Workshops:
1. Multiculturalism in metropolitan areas.
2. National state and homogenisation of minorities.
3. Empires: political entities, necessarily multicultural.
4. The concept of “Europe”: from the Greek mythological image to the EU.
5. Multiculturalism and cultural relativism.

Utrecht 6-10 luglio 2009, MEETING DELL'ISHA-INTERNATIONAL
